Pisani’s column should be read by all involved in gun debate

To the Editor

I think of Joseph Pisani’s weekly column as the chocolate chip cookie that waits for me on the Greenwich Life page of your newspaper.

Last week’s column, “Culture of Violence,” was even better. The column should be read by every one of the men and women who have been elected to public office.

It’s hard to know what’s going on in Congress. The media, as my husband is fond of saying, doesn’t report, it distorts. So it’s possible that there are members of that depressingly inadequate group in Washington, D.C., who have focused on the real issues pertaining to violence and the indiscriminate use of weapons by mentally ill individuals. (Our country’s response to mental illness and the rights/privileges of the mentally ill is a topic for another day.)

The current administration and its minions, as reported in the media, are focused almost entirely on limiting the sale of weapons and ammunition. What very few have mentioned is the ubiquitous presence of violence on movie and television screens. Nobody seems to care that our politicians, enjoying the considerable donations they receive from media corporations and “Hollywood” individuals, tread softly when criticism of that industry is merited.

We listen to the ravings of a Hollywood director and don’t describe him as “evil.” We hear shocking portrayals of violence defended as a “First Amendment right.” Does no one remember “crying ‘fire’ in a public theater”? We mourn the children lost in Connecticut but ignore the fact that many more little ones are daily becoming inured to death as they play on their Wii’s or PDAs.

I would send copies of Mr. Pisani’s column to the president, vice president, senators, and representatives — but I doubt that any of them would heed his message. More’s the pity. Thank you for printing it.
