Retired Men’s Association of Greenwich meets

Retired Men’s Association of Greenwich, Inc. (RMA) hosts a talk on Berlin, Cuba and Vietnam in the Sixties: Connections with Today’s Culture on Wednesday, Feb. 7, at 11 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church, Lafayette Place, Greenwich.

Take yourself back to the days of the Cold War, the Cuban Missile Crisis and then the Vietnam war — times imbedded in the psyches of all us who lived through them. Today’s speaker, John Donovan, son of New York attorney James Donovan, who negotiated the famous spy exchange which was dramatized in the recent movie Bridge of Spies and who was played by Tom Hanks, came of age very much in the middle of these times. A year after the spy exchange John was hair raisingly detained in East Berlin and shortly after the Missile Crisis he joined his father and Fidel Castro in a trip by car across Cuba returning with 35 U.S. citizens who were being held as prisoners. John will share insights gained both from these experiences as well as those of his father and relate them to the current era.

Donovan is the retired founder of a New York firm, Donovan-Fitzgerald Speaker Services that produced regular events bringing business executives together with diplomats from over 40 countries. He also served as a communications adviser to leaders of such companies as Ingersoll-Rand, Union Carbide, JP Morgan Chase, Sumitomo Trust, GE Capital, Columbia Pictures, Kobe Steel and Deloitte. He worked in the U.S. foreign aid program and with Unicef. He holds an M.A. degree from American University in foreign affairs. He served as a marine combat infantryman and combat correspondent. He and his wife of 46 years reside in Norwalk.

Next week, Feb. 14: Stephen Roach, Economist, “A World Turned Inside Out: Pitfalls of a New Generation.”

The Greenwich Retired Men’s Association offers a free program every Wednesday that is open to the public, both men and women; no reservations are required. Social break starts at 10:40 a.m., followed promptly by speaker at 11. For additional information see or contact [email protected]
