GPS celebrates Care for Self and Others — Join the Chain of Kindness

Care for Self and Others — Join the Chain of Kindness is one of many social emotional learning activities organized by the Greenwich Public Schools (GPS) this year as a way to promote a safe school climate by fostering social-emotional skills in students and reinforcing the District Norms.

The 2016-2017 school year marks the fourth year of events celebrating the District Norms: Be Here, Be Safe, Be Honest, Care for Self and Others, Let Go and Move On. Using lesson plans developed by mental health professionals and teachers, schools across the District will participate in these Social Emotional Learning activities. This year, the program will expand into the community with the support of a grant from the Greenwich Alliance for Education.

The GPS Social Emotional Learning events and activities invite the entire community to Dare 2 Care on Thursday, Nov. 10. A majority of students in the Greenwich Public Schools as well as the Greenwich Police Department will celebrate Care for Self and Others — Join the Chain of Kindness in school and in the community;

Care for Self and Others — Join the Chain of Kindness is a common initiative across grade levels to promote care, kindness, empathy and compassion.

Students will take this opportunity to:

  • Learn how to be kind and show compassion for others
  • Learn how to care for self and others and be a good friend
  • Discuss why it’s important to pay it forward and show kind behaviors to one another
  • Begin a paper chain of kindness where each link states an act of kindness they performed in school or at home. The paper chain starts in the classroom and grows bigger each day

In addition, Greenwich police officers will issue “Kindness Tickets” in the community when they “catch” people being good and kind citizens.

Mental health professionals and teachers from GPS schools coordinated the event with the teachers, administrators and students in their respective schools. Lesson plans were disseminated structured around the theme Care for Self and Others — Join the Chain of Kindness, encouraging teachers to implement them in their own creative ways. In addition, all teachers, staff and students in the GPS and at the Central Office are encouraged to wear the color red on Nov. 10, expressing their participation in the event.
