Temple Sholom Selma Maisel Nursery School welcomes new director

When entering the Temple Sholom Selma Maisel Nursery School (SMNS) each morning, children and parents are now greeted by not one, but two smiling faces, eager for an exciting school day ahead.

In September, early childhood educator David Cohen was hired as the school’s new director, following Phyllis Lyons’ decision to enter her 13th and final academic year with SMNS.

“We will deeply miss Phyllis’ daily presence with us after her retirement and are very grateful for all she has contributed to SMNS during her long tenure,” said Eileen Robin, Temple Sholom’s Executive Director. “We are excited to have David Cohen on board to uphold our play-based curriculum and to add a new dimension to our school and related programming.”

Cohen is no stranger to the Greenwich community, having worked as the Director of Educational Programs at the YMCA of Greenwich. His resume includes more than 25 years of early childhood experience and 15 years of senior management experience. He is also an adjunct college instructor, State-certified consultant and American Red Cross instructor and was previously the Men’s Club President of his synagogue.

“Children and families deserve the highest quality early childhood education,” said Cohen. “The Temple Sholom Selma Maisel Nursery School brings together outstanding staff and teachers and a stellar environment that achieves this important goal. Throughout my first year, I plan to enrich the current program and look for additional ways to serve young families.”

Lyons, who has taken on the role of Director Emertius, has been working closely with Cohen over the past few months to provide insight on the SMNS community and to ensure a smooth transition for all. One of her focuses is to prepare the Pre-K families for Kindergarten, including school applications and evaluations.

“For the past 25 years I have dedicated myself to educating children,” said Lyons. “My love and dedication for our SMNS family is absolute. I treasure my many years working with our school community and the Temple at large, and I am extremely committed to ensuring that all future SMNS generations continue to receive a legacy of excellence.”
