RMA Lecture: Criminal Defense Law — The Skakel Case

Retired Men’s Association of Greenwich, Inc. (RMA) welcomes criminal defense attorney Michael A. Fitzpatrick to its next meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 11 a.m., at First Presbyterian Church, Lafayette Place, Greenwich. Fitzpatrick will discuss “Criminal Defense Law: The Skakel Case.”

As one of Connecticut’s foremost criminal defense attorneys Michael Fitzpatrick has a passion for cases involving actual innocence and wrongful conviction.  In 2013 his expert witness testimony in a habeas corpus hearing contributed to the overturning of the conviction of Kennedy cousin Michael Skakel for murdering Martha Moxley. The Connecticut Supreme Court’s ruling on the overturning of Skakel’s conviction is due soon.

In this program he will discuss this case, among other interesting cases to illustrate how criminal defense attorneys work. He was involved in some of the state’s most notorious criminal cases, including the appeal of serial killer Michael Ross in the precedent-setting appeal of his death sentences. He has obtained complete jury trial acquittals for multiple clients in homicide cases, including death penalty cases.

Fitzpatrick is one of Connecticut’s premier criminal defense and trial lawyers. He brings more than a quarter century of knowledge and experience to his statewide private practice, which focuses on criminal defense and civil litigation in state and federal court. He successfully defended hundreds of clients on charges ranging from motor vehicle violations to capital felony to white collar crime. In 2014, the Connecticut Criminal Defense Lawyers Association (CCDLA) honored him with its prestigious Champion of Liberty award for his professional excellence and contributions to criminal justice.

A graduate of Purdue University, Mike earned his law degree at the University of Bridgeport School of Law (now the Quinnipiac University School of Law). He is the former president of the Connecticut Criminal Defense Lawyers Association (CCDLA), a member of the Connecticut Bar Association, and a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He is admitted to practice in Connecticut and also the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the Supreme Court of the United States. Mike is also a sought-after legal expert whose commentary has been featured before national audiences.

Next week: The RMA’s next program will be on November 9, featuring Bobby Valentine, the former manager of the NY Mets and current Athletic Director of Sacred Heart University
