Greenwich athletes compete for Greens Farms Academy

Varsity volleyball

The girls varsity volleyball team won against The Masters School on Monday, Sept. 19 by scores of 25-23, 22-25, 25-18, 13-25, 15-10. GFA had 33 kills and a steady strong service attack that allowed the Dragons capture a five-set victory. The match ended with junior Ililta Pina (Westport) serving the last five points, and senior Olivia Sullivan providing a final block. Leading the attack for GFA was sophomore Kirwan Carey (Ridgefield, 21 kills, 5 blocks), followed by senior Olivia Sullivan (Norwalk, 12 kills, 5 blocks). Setter freshman Meg Nesi (Westport) had 21 assists and multiple drop shots. Contributing on defense for the Dragons was Pina (12 digs) and sophomores Alex Nason (Darien, 10 digs) and Celeste Matte (Stratford, 8 digs).

On Wednesday, Sept. 21, the team lost to Cheshire Academy 0-3 (17-25, 6-25, 7-25), and lost on the road to King 0-3 on Sept. 23 (9-25, 14-25, 22-25). Leading the Dragons were Sullivan (8 kills, 4 blocks), Carey (4 kills, 2 blocks) and Nesi (9 assists, 4 aces).

Varsity field hockey

Tuesday, Sept. 20, GFA opened up its field hockey season at home against Hackley. The teams battled to a 0-0 tie in the first half with freshman Abby Everett (Fairfield) making her first defensive save after the ball sneaked by freshman goal keeper Nikki Farber (Westport). Sophomore Lucy Holzinger (Norwalk) scored with 12 minutes left in the game from an assist by sophomore Francesca DeVita (Darien). Holzinger sealed the game-winner with a reverse chip into the upper right corner, again assisted by DeVita. Farber finished with eight saves for GFA.

On Thursday, Sept. 22, GFA traveled to Cheshire Academy, losing 1-2. Cheshire got on the board first, but GFA answered when freshman Laila Pina (Weston) found senior Chloe Messina (Old Greenwich) for the goal. GFA finished the match with 19 offensive corners and 16 shots on goal. Sophomore back Alex Nesi (Fairfield) and junior Ryan Morris (Stamford) were key in helping the Dragons transition back to offense.

Saturday, Sept. 24, the Lady Dragons traveled to King, losing 4-0. Sophomore Bryn Morrison (Weston) and junior Ryan Morris (Stamford) helped control the defense and transition to offense. Everett recorded a second defensive save again.

Boys varsity soccer

The boys varsity soccer team traveled to Hopkins on Wednesday, Sept. 21, losing 3-1. The team rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit when junior Ian Lee (Greenwich) scored midway through the second half. Junior goalkeeper Henry Holzinger (Norwalk) controlled the back and made key stops throughout the game. GFA finished the week, with a 5-1 victory over Marianapolis on Sept. 24. Lee had three of GFA’s goals while McDonald had the other two.

Girls varsity soccer

The girls varsity soccer team won over WNEPSSA opponent Cheshire Academy 6-2 on Sept. 20. Senior Clare Mengel (Fairfield) scored one of her four goals within the first 10 minutes. In the second half, junior Bella Litt (Darien) and sophomore Ella Murphy (Darien) each netted one, both assisted by Mengel. Senior captain goalkeeper Lexi Kimball (Easton) finished with more than 10 saves in the match.

On Thursday, Sept. 22, GFA lost to FAA rival Rye Country Day School, 1-2. Rye’s two scores both came at the end of the first half. To start the second period, sophomore Sarah Logan (Darien) scored off a pass from Murphy. Freshman goalkeeper Ryan Boyle (Southport) finished with 23 saves.

The team finished their week with a 2-0 win over King School on Saturday, Sept. 24. The team dominated the game with 25 shots. Mengel scored both goals for the Dragons. Sophomore Kelly Van Hoesen (Greenwich) spearheaded the defense. Lexi Kimball notched her second shutout, recording over 10 saves, including three on breakaways.

Cross country

The GFA cross country team ran Wednesday, Sept. 21, at Edith Reed Bird Sanctuary in Rye against a strong field of FAA teams. Freshman Owen Minson (Darien) crossed the finish line at 20:35. Senior captain Tyler Green (Westport) finished with a time of 20:10. For the girls, senior captain Eva Scianna (Trumbull) finished in 28:25.

On Saturday, Sept. 24, the JV squad ran faced King. Freshman Win Courtemanche (Rowayton) finished in 21:36 and freshman Tia Farlow (Westport) finished in 26:32. The varsity ran in the Canterbury Invitational in New Milford, with the boys finishing 10th of 17 teams. Junior Sean Minson (Darien) finished in the top 20 with a personal best time of 19:04. Freshman Charlie Bohnsack (Darien) finished at 20:16.
