Free college essay seminar Sept. 14

Greenwich Education Group, in partnership with Arch Street Teen Center of Greenwich, will hold a free college essay seminar, “Taking the Stress Out of the College Essay” on Wednesday, Sept. 14, at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m., at the Arch Street Greenwich Teen Center, 100 Arch Street, Greenwich. Each session will be about 90 minutes and will include a question and answer session. Arch Street is a drug and alcohol free center offering programs for 6th through 12th graders, as well as special speaker events for the parent community of Greenwich.

“The essay need not be viewed as a daunting task,” said Hilary Stark, associate director of College Consulting for Greenwich Education Group. “In reality, it gives students a chance to express themselves and provide insight into who they are. It can be the most personal and powerful part of the entire application.”

Stark has more than 15 years of experience helping students choose the right schools for themselves and then navigating the college application process.

Victoria C. Newman, Founder and Executive Director of Greenwich Education Group, said, “Our focus is on making sure that each student has the best educational experience possible. We believe the essay is the critical part of the application, and we work to ensure that each essay represents the applicant in the best possible light. Our successful launch of this free college essay seminar last year, in cooperation with our Arch Street partners, showed us that both parents and students are seeking advice and guidance in achieving a successful outcome. This is the hallmark of GEG’s college advisory practice.”

The seminar will cover a range of topics, including choosing the most appropriate prompt questions on the Common Application as well as supplemental essay, selecting the right topics, using the right tone, style and approach, organizing the drafts and final versions, and avoiding common mistakes.

Kyle Silver, executive director of Arch Street Greenwich Teen Center, explains the synergy in working with GEG given the important nature of the seminar. “The college application process can feel fairly intimidating for the entire family. We are pleased to be working with GEG to give students and parents the opportunity to lower the anxiety level that comes with these challenges.”
