Greenwich High ice hockey wins FCIAC opener against Fairfield, 4-2

The Greenwich High School boys ice hockey team started its run in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference in grand fashion, beating the combined Fairfield Warde/Ludlowe team 4-2 earlier this evening at Wonderland of Ice.

After a quiet first period, Greenwich came out firing in the second an posted a 1-0 lead. Luke Finneran put the Cardinals in front at the 11:35 mark of the second, as Paul Macken took the pass from Brian Silard behind the goal line. After circling around the net, Macken made the perfect pass through the crease to Finneran on the opposite side of the net and blasted the shot home.

Although Big Red held the 1-0 lead with one period to play, it didn’t last long, as Fairfield started the third with two goals in the first seven minutes of the frame.

Instead of packing it in on the road, Greenwich turned up the pressure and scored the equalizer at the 10:51 mark of the third. Matt Lodato was skating down the middle of the ice and when the Fairfield goalie went down, Lodato found the top of the net for the 2-2 score.. Reed Brady and Alex Bastone netted assists on the play.

Greenwich wasn’t finished, as they took the lead 28 seconds later, as Bastone once again passed to Lodato, who found the back of the net.

With 10 seconds to play, Silard iced the game by scoring the empty net goal.

With the victory, Greenwich improves to 1-0 in the FCIAC and will be back in action when they host the Staples-Weston-Shelton combined team at 6:30 p.m.
