Fiction Addiction Club: A Man Called Ove

While Greenwich Library sponsors five adult book groups, none currently focus on contemporary fiction. Recognizing the need for a new book group, Greenwich Library staffers Joanne Gaither and Robin Terzi have launched ‘Fiction Addiction.’

The second meeting of Fiction Addiction will be held on Monday, July 11, from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Meeting Room. The club will discuss the international bestseller A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman for the group’s second read, a title recommended and chosen by members at the May meeting. Future Fiction Addiction titles will likewise be collaboratively selected.

The libraries have 25 physical copies of Ove, including three in large print. There are also downloadable audiobook and ebook options. Check the catalog for location and availability.

Says Publisher’s Weekly, “In this Swedish bestseller, Ove is a lovably miserable neighborhood curmudgeon—think a cross between Up’s Carl Fredricksen and Parks and Recreation’s Ron Swanson—who spends his days inspecting his community and criticizing others…After his handicapped wife dies and he is forced to retire from his job, Ove decides he’s ready to leave the world behind. But every time he tries to off himself, he’s interrupted…. The debut novel from journalist Backman is a fuzzy crowd-pleaser that serves up laughs to accompany a thoughtful reflection on loss and love.”

Greenwich Library staff members Joanne Gaither and Robin Terzi have often been asked why there isn’t a library-sponsored fiction book club. Robin’s work in circulation makes her keenly aware of new and popular titles and Joanne often assists patrons in selecting reading material. The new club will meet every other month.

Greenwich Library hosts five additional book clubs for adults that meet either monthly or bimonthly. The clubs listed below are on hiatus for the summer with the exception of Great Books and Amici Del Libro. Foreign Affairs Book Discussion Group – third Tuesday 7-9 p.m.; Friends Book Group – second Tuesday, 1-3 p.m.; Great Books Discussion Group – first Thursday 9-11:30 a.m.; Next Chapter Book Group — periodic meetings; Amici Del Libro Italian Language Book Group – first and third Mondays from12:30-2:30 p.m. For more information about Library Book Groups, including groups held at the Branches, visit
