Greenwich girls basketball can’t push past Ridgefield, falls 48-44

Although it was a close battle throughout this evening’s contest, the Greenwich High School girls basketball team was unable to break through against Ridgefield High School earlier tonight. Big Red held a 21-19 lead at the half, but were unable to maintain the lead, falling to the Tigers 48-44.

Greenwich head coach Chrys Hernandez said that a key factor down the stretch for Big Red was the fourth quarter loss of Jenny Cespedes and Abby Wolf, who both went down to injury.

“I think overall we never had any fluidity to our game,” Hernandez said. “Ridgefield’s pressure frazzled us, which forced us to turn the ball over too much and they were able to capitalize. It was a close game and I thought we had a few chances to pull ahead. The loss of Jenny and Abby in the fourth quarter definitely affected the team.”

Cespedes still was able to lead the way for the Cardinals, as she finished a perfect 6-for-6 from the line and totaled 16 points. Caroline Barrett added eight points, while Jamie Kockenmeister added six points. Wolf pitched in with five points and Alexa Moses contributed with five points. Rebecca DeCarlo chipped in with three points and Caroline Benzille rounded out the scoring for Greenwich with two points.

With the loss, Greenwich fell to 3-6 on the season and will be back in action Tuesday when they host St. Joseph High School.
