Free self defense class for women offered

The Junior League of Greenwich and the YWCA Greenwich will host a free Women’s Self Defense Class on Saturday, Jan. 5 from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the YWCA Greenwich. The class, which is part of the Junior League’s Done in a Day series of community projects, is designed to teach women safety and defense strategies.

The class will be taught by Frank Drake, owner of Genesis Diversified Services in Yonkers, N.Y. The program, known as the S.T.O.R.M. Self Defense Program, teaches counter-offense rather than defense to repel attacks. Participants will receive one-on-one coaching to learn defense tactics, and have the opportunity to practice safety and defense techniques in a hands-on program.

The Junior League of Greenwich and the YWCA are co-sponsoring this free three-hour course, which is limited to 40 women. A complimentary lunch will be provided. Early registration is encouraged. To register for this free class, visit the Junior League of Greenwich website at jlgreenwich.org or contact Betsy Reiss at 203-869-1979.

Interested participants can also e-mail Debbie Miron, Self Defense Class co-chair at [email protected] to register or for more information.

As this class involves physical activity, it is recommended that participants wear athletic clothing and footwear. In the event of inclement weather, the class will be rescheduled and participants will be notified.
