Greenwich High wrestling beats Staples, New Canaan, falls to Brien McMahon

In their final match of 2012, the Greenwich High School wrestling team went 2-1 on the day, beating Staples High School 55-21 and New Canaan High School 54-21, but falling to Brien McMahon High School in a nail-biter, 40-39.

Big Red was led by Mark Chien, Eric Tack, Mike Gestal, Grant Cucchissi and Jack Benenson, who each went 3-0 on the afternoon.

In the 120-pound weight class, Chien pinned Brien McMahon’s Robbie Perschino at the 2:36 mark of the match. Against Staples’ Matt Prior, Chien got the pinfall 13 seconds earlier. Wrestling down at 113, Chien made quick work of New Canaan’s Danilo Bulgini, picking up the pinfall 44 seconds into the match.

Tack found success in the 152-pound weight class. In one of the shortest matches of the afternoon, Tack beat his New Canaan opponent 20 seconds in. Against Staples’ Eric Johnson, Tack scored the pinfall win 1:38 into the match. Competing against Junior Sierra of McMahon, Tack got his opponent’s shoulders to the mat at the 1:49 mark.

Rounding out the Big Red athletes who won all their matches by pinfall was Gestal. Competing in the 160-pound division, he beat McMahon’s Ryan Restivo (1:15) and Staples’ Alex Kogstad (52 seconds). Moving up a weight class against New Canaan didn’t effect Gestal at all, pinning Aidan Donovan at the 1:21 mark of the match.

Cucchissi also had a stellar afternoon, netting two of his three victories via the pinfall. At 182, Chcchissi scored two quick pins, stopping Staples’ Matt Collins 55 seconds into the match and McMahon’s Zach Ceme 15 seconds in. Against the Ram’s Brandon Pak at 195 pounds, Cucchissi came away with the 12-3 decision.

Benenson had a tougher route to get to 3-1 on the day, but was equally successful. After getting a forfeit victory against Staples, Benenson took to the mat against New Canaan’s Frankie Hogan at the 120-pound weight class and netted a 7-3 decision. Competing at 126, Benenson beat McMahon’s Paul Deorio, 14-5.

Other Greenwich High athletes scored points during the afternoon. Against the Senators, Kyle Hernandez netted a pinfall victory, while Alex Margeotes won withe a technical fall.

Against New Canaan, Thomas Williams (220), Mike McCaffrey (145) and Bryce Stanback (132) each won via a pinfall, with Mitchell Nethercott and Hernandez each winning due to a forfeit.
