Greenwich Arts Council trip to Havana offers exclusive look at Cuban art, culture

The Greenwich Arts Council (GAC) is preparing for a special one-week educational exchange in Havana, Cuba to gain exclusive access to private art collections, artists’ studios, and unique art, dance and music performances and residents are invited to be a part of it.

Those going will be accompanied on the trip by Benjamin Ortiz, independent curator and expert on Latin American, Cuban and Caribbean Art, GAC Curator Tatiana Mori and Batia Plotch, who specializes in organizing trips to Cuba that are considered “off the beaten path,” according to the GAC.

The cultural scene in Cuba is rich and sophisticated, and there will be many opportunities to experience it. Participants will exchange ideas about art and culture at the homes of artists, some of them internationally known; see the artists’ work; visit various craft fairs; visit the national art museum in Havana, as well as the museum of the Revolution and other historic sites; and enjoy the Latin music and dance of Cuba including the Buena Vista Social Club and the Grand Ballet Theatre. The trip will also include walks through Old Havana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and visits to other neighborhoods which display the incredibly diverse architectural and artistic glories of Cuba.

The trip takes place March 17 to 24, 2013 and costs for the trip include airfare from JFK to Jose Marti International Airport in Havana, accommodations in the five-star Park Central Hotel for five nights and two nights in equally splendid hotels while visiting Santa Clara, Cienfuegos and Trinidad. All meals are included, with the exception of two dinners to be held in Paladors (private homes), as well as all admissions, travel in an air-conditioned bus, visas, licenses and medical insurance to cover any medical expenses while in Cuba.

Space for the trip is limited. Call Tatiana Mori at 203-862-6754 for more information, pricing and a brochure detailing the full itinerary of the trip.

The GAC is located at 299 Greenwich Avenue, second floor, and can be reached by calling 203-862-6750.
