Greenwich Public Schools celebrates Be Honest — Keep It Real

On Thursday, May 19, a majority of students in the Greenwich Public Schools will celebrate Be Honest — Keep it Real in school.

Be Honest — Keep it Real is a common initiative across grade levels to teach students how to recognize, understand and control their feelings and how to calm down and cope with stress.

Students will:

  • learn how to take responsibility for personal actions by admitting personal mistakes, making an honest apology and offering solutions to solve the situation;
  • practice setting personal goals and developing a vision for their personal life and taking responsibility for the actions needed to make those plans happen;
  • learn about moral and ethical principles and how those should provide guidance in making choices when faced with difficult situations; and
  • identify ways to treat others in an honest and fair way.

The Be Honest — Keep it Real event is a meaningful initiative in three ways:

  • First, it promotes character traits such as honesty and responsibility toward oneself and others and how to make principled decisions in life (i.e. What is the right thing to do?”).
  • Second, it creates an opportunity to practice social skills such as admitting personal mistakes, apologizing, being mindful of other people’s feelings, and treating them with fairness and compassion.
  • Third, it encourages students to develop a personal vision for their life and identify the moral principles that would guide their choices in difficult situations.

Mental health professionals and teachers from all GPS schools coordinated the event with the teachers, administrators and students in their respective schools. Lesson plans were disseminated structured around the theme BE HONEST – KEEP IT REAL, encouraging teachers to implement them in their own creative ways. In addition, all teachers, staff and students in the GPS and at the Central Office are encouraged to wear the color ORANGE on May 19, expressing their participation in the event.
