Greenwich High gymnasts go 2-1 in opening meet

The Greenwich High School gymnastics team started its season earlier today by picking up two victories, beating Joel Barlow and Weston, but falling to Staples High School.

The Wreckers finished with 119.9 points on the day, while the Cardinals were a close second with 114.75 points. Joel Barlow took the bronze with 103.35 points and Weston rounded out the scoring with 51.6 points.


Greenwich was led by Kat McCaffrey, who was the all-around high scorer in the meet, netting a score of 32. Helping her get there was a first place performance in the bars (8.0) and on the beam (8.3).

The Lady Cards also had top scoring from Tori Mann and Emily Clarke, as Clarke took third in the vault with a score of 8.0. Mann also grabbed the bronze, taking third in the bars competition with a 7.6.

McCaffrey was tops overall, but Staples’ Andrea Mahieu wasn’t far behind, grabbing second overall with a score of 31.45. She finished second in the bars (7.8) and tied McCaffrey in the beam with a score of 8.3.

Fellow Staples High gymnast Anna Violette was mere inches away from her teammate, finishing third with a total score of 31.15.

Other GHS gymnasts that fared well were Bryony Brock, who netted a score of 6.7 on the beam. Also competing on the beam was Alice Statham, who picked up a score of 6.4.

The duo of Victoria Houson and Camille Monette netted a high score on the floor exercise, as Monette grabbed a score of 7.4 and Houson finished with a score of 7.0

The Cardinals will be back in action on Jan. 4, when the battle Fairfield Warde High School.
