Officer starts town coat drive

As winter sets in, Greenwich police officer William Larkin has set up a coat drive at police headquarters in hope of bringing some warmth to those in need.

Working off the model established by the Stamford Police Department’s coat drive, which began two years ago, Officer Larkin said he is relying on the media and word of mouth to spread news of the winter clothing drive.

On Monday, Officer Larkin set up large cardboard boxes in the lobby of GPD headquarters, ready for the collection of coats, hats, mittens, and any other warm winter clothing the community has to offer. Every two to three days he plans to empty the boxes into a storage room to make room for more donations, until approximately Dec. 22.

After speaking with Neighbor to Neighbor, a town organization that distributes food and clothing to those in need, Officer Larkin said it was clear that there are plenty of Greenwich families who could benefit from a winter clothing drive. Although the town is generally perceived as affluent, there are more residents than one might expect who need the community’s support, he said.

Charity work is not new to Officer Larkin. He has participated in past events to raise money for ALS and pancreatic cancer research.

“I’ve always dabbled a little in trying to give to the community,” he said.

Assuming the coat drive is successful, Officer Larkin says he hopes to continue the drive in future years to provide support to Greenwich residents who need it most.

“There are people who don’t have fundamental necessities like coats and mittens,” and it is up to the community to help them, he said.

To donate winter clothing items, look for one of several large cardboard boxes in the lobby of police headquarters, which will serve as collection bins.
