Greenwich High boys ice hockey beats Westhill, 4-3

The Greenwich High School boys ice hockey team held on Tuesday afternoon to upend Westhill High School in overtime, 4-3 at the Dorothy Hamill Ice Rink.

After grabbing a 3-0 lead with one period to play, the Viking erupted for three goals in the final 10 minutes to knot the score at 3-3.

However, that’s when Big Red’s William Waesche took over, taking the pass from Paul Macken and firing a shot in the back of the net for the game-winning goal with only 1:38 gone by in the extra frame.

Greenwich got the ball going in the first period. With less than three minutes to play in the period, Matt Lodato and Decker Curran raced towards the net. Lodato connected on a perfect pass to Curran, who finished the play with a goal.

The Cards scored twice in the second period, courtesy of back-to-back shorthanded goals by Luke Finneran.

The first was on a 5-on-3 penalty kill, as Finneran won the race for the loose puck and skated down the ice for the breakaway goal. The other goal happened less than two minutes later.
