Newtown church evacuated after receiving unspecified threat

According to several reports, a standing room only group of parishioners at St. Rose of Lima Church in Newtown was evacuated during the middle of Sunday’s noon mass as the result of an unspecified threat.

Hundreds of people were told to exit the church about halfway through the service.

No further information on the threat was given but local and state police, including heavily armed officers, were at the scene.

Hundreds of teddy bears that had been collected and were to be distributed at the end of the mass sat untouched as parishioners evacuated the building.

On Sunday morning, Connecticut State Police Public Information Officer Lt. J. Paul Vance said there have been a number of threats and other false information overwhelming social media sites. Lt. Vance said anyone caught making such threats would be charged to the fullest extent of the law.
