Obama to visit Newtown tonight; Sandy Hook support fund established

Two days after the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School that claimed the lives of 20 children and six adults, an act police are still struggling to find a motive for, President Obama is set to visit Newtown.

The president will attend an interfaith vigil for the victims of the shooting this evening at 7 p.m. at Newtown High School, an event that is open only to the victims’ families. He will not make a public appearance in town.

This will be the fourth time in his presidency that the president will travel to a town after a shooting, making it an all too familiar experience.

President Obama gave a tearful speech Friday as he addressed the nation regarding the shooting spree.

“Our hearts are broken today for the parents and grandparents, sisters and brothers of these little children and for the families of the adults who were lost,” the president said during his speech. “Our hearts are broken for the parents of the survivors as well for as blessed as they are to have their children home tonight they know that their children’s innocence has been torn away from them too early and there are no words that will ease their pain. As a country we have been through this too many times. Whether it’s an elementary school in Newtown or a shopping mall in Oregon or a temple in Wisconsin or a movie theater in Aurora or a street corner in Chicago. These neighborhoods are our neighborhoods and these children are our children. And we’re going to have to come together to take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this regardless of the politics.”

While the public is not invited to tonight’s interfaith vigil, an official support fund has been established for Sandy Hook victims’ families and can be found at newtown.uwwesternct.org.
