LETTER: McKersie should remain superintendent of Greenwich Public Schools

Letter-to-the-EditorNEWDear Mr. Mckersie:
As someone who has never been shy to tell you my ideas, even though most parents fear putting their name in writing when it comes to challenging educational policies because they believe that their children will be somehow be negatively impacted at school, I implore you to reconsider your recent decision not to stay on as Superintendent of the Greenwich Public School system.
I have worked with tumultuous boards — that have resorted — even — to physical violence!) as a public library director with over 15 years of experience. I know what it is like to deal with not only negative press but false press, environmental emergencies, a divided public, a Town government that recklessly ran up debt into the millions for un-needed special projects like re-lightening of little league fields to shine at midnight! or random mysterious bond funded street paving projects–again and again and again–for dead end, non-used “paper” streets. I know what it is like to be one of the few people in Town to speak up against waste and nonsense and debt and to connect such to underperforming institutions.
Please, please Mr. McKersie don’t be afraid of us! We Greenwichites are verbal people but we are not that bad. We have a decent and fair minded Town Government and thousands of parents who have given their all to live here. We support you.
Please keep your eyes on the prize of continuing to make the amazing and efficient and revolutionary changes you have thus far.
Please reach out to leaders in our community that have withstood the test of time and have planted themselves here, though it may have been challenging at times. There are many wise religious leaders here in town, attorneys, community activists and the like that you can call up and turn to.
They will advise you on how to flourish in Greenwich. They will be at your side as you run the spiritual marathon of working here as a leader in Town.
I suggest you — at least — call the following people before you throw in the towel.
Sometimes leaders need to reach out beyond their Board Members and the circle of influencers and constituents to refresh and get a bigger, wider, clearer focus.
These people will be totally objective and offer you advise on how to be an effective and happy change agent in Greenwich.
Please call them before you make a final, final decision to leave.
They will LISTEN to you and not pressure you.
I BELIEVE YOU ARE THE LEADER FOR THE JOB OF SUPERINTENDENT FOR THE NEXT 10 YEARS and hope you will take a deep breathe and stay.
