Greenwich High boys ice hockey doubles up West Haven, 4-2

The Greenwich High School boys ice hockey team got its season off to a good start earlier today at the Bennett Rink in West Haven, besting West Haven High School 4-2.

Big Red took a 2-0 lead after the first period. Jack Corrigan took the pass from Alex Bastone at the top of the circle on a power play and beat West Haven goalie Michael Savino at the 12:22 mark of the period. With only five seconds remaining in the period, and short-handed, Big Red added another goal, as Luke Finneran blocked a pass at center ice and sprinted towards the West Haven end on a breakaway.

Although West Haven beat GHS goalie Bryan Archino to make the score 2-1, Big Red came through yet again with some late period dramatics. In the waning moments of the period, Finneran took a shot from the boards and Brian Silard deflected the puck over the goalie just as the buzzer sounded to make the score 3-1.

Both teams added a goal in the final frame. Reed Brady gave Greenwich its 4-2 lead at the 9:24 mark of the period, as she blasted a wrist shot from the top of the circle as he was skating in to the left of the WHHS goalie.

Greenwich’s Archino was stellar in net, finishing with 18 saves. Big Red blasted 21 shots on net in the victory.
