Carols by candlelight

Saint Mary Church is ready to spread Christmas cheer when they present a candlelight Christmas concert on Sunday, Dec. 16 at 3 p.m. in the church.

Director of Music Marjorie Donalds will lead the St. Mary Adult Choir, along with soloists and instrumentalists in a program of traditional Christmas music. Also performing will be the St. Mary Youth Choir, under the direction of Jennifer Roberts-Jenkins.

A Stamford resident, Ms. Donalds has worked at regional theatres across the country, including the Goodspeed Opera House.

She also sang the role of Grizabella in the national tour of Cats. Locally Ms. Donalds has appeared as a soloist with the Norwalk Symphony, singing the role of Solveig in Peer Gynt. She has also devoted herself to sacred music in Greenwich for twenty years, first as the cantor at St. Michael Church and later by joining the music ministry of St. Mary as cantor, director of music and choir director.

St. Mary organist Joe Mennonna began his musical career while still in college at Yale University where he graduated as Scholar of the House in Music. He began his work in liturgical music 17 years ago at the Friars of the Atonement at Graymoor. Classically trained in piano, Mr. Mennonna is a Grammy nominated producer and also a composer and arranger for movie features, documentaries and industrial presentations. He has toured and recorded with celebrities such as Vanessa Williams, Kevin Bacon, Don McClean and Ian Gillian, among many others.

After winning the Quinnipiac Young Voices Competition, he participated in the Brevard Music Festival, where he was selected to portray the lead in the east coast premiere of Coyote Tales by Henry Mollicone.

Stephen Lavonier, baritone, was the winner of Mercury Opera’s Coney Island Pagliacci contest, where he sang the role of Silvio. Also with Mercury Opera, Mr. Lavonier sang the role of Sharpless in Madame Butterfly in Edmonton, Canada. He has sung title roles with Opera Manhattan, Dicapo Opera, Tri-Cities Opera and Purchase College Opera and is a graduate of the Hartt School of Music.

All are welcome to come to Saint Mary Church and experience the joyful sounds of the Christmas season in a concert that the whole family can enjoy. The program will include plenty of opportunities for the audience to sing along on the most beloved carols of the season.

There is a suggested donation of $10 for adults. Children are free. There will be a light reception after the performance.
