GPS holds school start time community engagement sessions

The district is considering alternative start and end bell time options for Greenwich Public Schools for the 2017-18 school year.  These options have the potential to impact the start and end times for all Greenwich Public Schools- the high school, middle schools and elementary schools. You can find the list of options and analyses attached to this email communication.

The School Start Time (SST) Steering Committee wants your feedback on the options and will hold a series of Community Engagement Sessions in advance of and following the Superintendent’s recommendation to the BOE. We have scheduled the following Community Engagement Sessions:

  • April 6 – 7:00 pm at Central Middle School
  • April 7 – 9:00am at Greenwich Public Library, Cole Auditorium
  • April 19- 6:30pm at Boys and Girls Club

Important Opportunities for Community Engagement:

  • April 6, 7 and 19 – Options Review Community Engagement Sessions: These sessions are designed to provide the community with opportunities to learn about possible school bell-time options and implications, and to provide feedback and views on the options (See attached Flyer).  Childcare is provided at all evening community sessions, and Spanish translation will be available at day and evening sessions.
  • April 6- June 14 – Online Comment Form: An online response form will be available on the website after the first community engagement session on April 6 and will be available for further public comments through June 14 when the BOE votes on the recommendation.
  • April – Options Survey: The community will be asked to share their preferences on the options in a survey that will be disseminated to the public no later than the end of April, 2016. The goal is to provide the SST Steering Committee time to review the responses before the Superintendent’s recommendation to the BOE.
  • April – June – Board of Education Meetings and SST Meetings: In addition, the community is invited to attend BOE meetings and SST- Steering Committee meetings to follow the development of and discussions on the options.
  • April 7- BOE Work Session, 7:00p, Havemeyer
  • April 21 – BOE Regular Meeting, 7:00p, Riverside School (open for public comments)
  • Details on these engagement opportunities may be found in the attached flyer and on the GPS web site at
  • May 12 — Superintendent’s Recommendation: Superintendent of Schools, Bill McKersie is scheduled to present a recommendation on possible changes to K-12 school start (and dismissal) times to the Board of Education on May 12, 2016, 7:00 p.m. at North Street School.
  • May 23 and 24- Community Engagement Sessions on the Recommendations: This second set of Community Sessions will be held on May 23 and 24, after the Superintendent’s presentation to the BOE on May 12. This will provide the public with another opportunity to discuss the recommendation and the plans for implementing changes to bell times, if applicable.
  • June 14 – BOE action on School Start Times: The Board of Education is scheduled to act on the Superintendent’s recommendation on June 14, 2016, 7:00 p.m. at New Lebanon School.
