Brunswick wrestling team finishes with the silver at Loomis Holiday Duals

The Brunswick wrestling team traveled to the Loomis Chaffee Holiday Duals, one of the premier events on the New England prep school wrestling calendar on Saturday.

The Bruins went 3-0 in their pool to earn a place in the finals. Brunswick beat Loomis Chaffee School 48-27, Avon Academy 52-30 and Windsor High 64-12 to set up a championship match against defending New England champion Northfield Mount Hermon School. In the last match of the day, Brunswick wrestled tough, but came up just short in an exciting and close finale, falling 40-36.

With the loss, Brunswick finished the tournament second overall, with Trinity-Pawling taking the bronze and Avon Old Farm placing fourth. Exeter rounded out the top five.

All Brunswick wrestlers were impressive Saturday, in terms of the effort they put forth; they displayed grit and determination, while also showing strong sportsmanship throughout.

The Bruins had a plethora of highlights on the afternoon. Sophomore Matt Marvin went a perfect 4-0 on the day, wrestling up a weight class at 195. Senior tri-captain Connor Kupersmith also was 4-0 on the day at 152, as well junior Owen Schubert at 132. Returning from an illness, junior Gregg Nabhan was stellar in the 160-pound weight class, finishing 2-0 overall. Senior Joe Caruso wrestled the other two matches at 160 and went 1-1.

Also undefeated on Saturday were the Brunswick heavyweight wrestlers. Senior Nick Ulanoff and Willy Rosato each picked up two wins, while junior Evan Jonokuchi went 2-0 at 145. In addition to his flawless afternoon, Jonokuchi was able to exact revenge on an Avon Old Farms wrestler that beat him earlier in the week. Freshman Griffin Thomas also competed on Saturday and finished 1-1 on the day.
