Brunswick wrestlers start dual meet season with dominating performance against Avon

The Brunswick wrestling team made a statement during the start of its dual meet season earlier Wednesday against Avon Old Farms, coming away with a strong 63-16 win.

Brunswick and Avon have emerged in recent years as rivals who have great respect for one another. The previous four dual meets had been decided by a total of seven points, but this time around, the Bruins were the superior wrestlers and caught a couple breaks along the way.

Brunswick won nine of the 12 contested matches. The Bruins also received two forfeits, one in the 145-pound weight class and another at 170,  as two talented Avon wrestlers failed to make weight at the pre-match weigh-in.

Newcomer Jack Jones, a sophomore, got the first win for Bruins with a second period pin in his varsity debut. One of Brunswick’s toughest competitors, junior Owen Schubert, earned a second period win in the 132-pound weight class and the Bruins didn’t look back, winning the next seven matches.

Wins were earned by junior co-captain Jimmy Bell, senior co-captain Connor Kupersmith, senior Joe Caruso, junior Michael Keating, sophomore Matt Marvin, junior Dan Hughes and senior Willy Rosato.

Avon entered this year as the defending WNEISWA champions, with Brunswick second  at that tournament last year. The teams will ironically face off again this weekend as they were drawn into the same pool at Saturday’s Loomis Chaffee Holiday Duals.
