Greenwich Education Group: Academic tutoring, college prep offered to student-athletes

Student-athletes in all grades are hoping to soon get a boost from Greenwich Education Group, which will set up shop at Sono Field House in South Norwalk to help the students improve academics and prepare for college.

The Greenwich-based firm, which currently provides students and parents throughout the state with a myriad of academic services — including academic tutoring, test prep and college counseling — will soon take over the 52,000 square foot indoor sports and special events facility and offer a fee-based educational services to student-athletes.

“In this age of increasing competition to gain admittance to the college of their choice, student-athletes of all ages must stay on top of their school work and high stakes testing,” said Peter Newman, CEO of Greenwich Education Group. “The process of selecting a college that fulfills the academic and athletic needs of a young man or woman can be a daunting experience, especially when you realize that this sort of college planning is beginning earlier and earlier … These Sono Field House sessions will make it possible for our educators to provide peace of mind to a large number of families, enabling them to not only understand the role that good academics plays in the overall development of our young student-athletes, but the need to enjoy the journey as well.”

According to Mr. Newman, session participants will have access to a wide range of topics and services designed to help today’s student-athlete cope with the major decisions and tasks which are likely to confront them. Services will include general academic preparation, college, day and boarding school advising, and high stakes test preparation. Additionally, an overview of the student-athlete recruiting process, a guide to developing an effective self-marketing plan and NCAA compliance procedures will be addressed in informational seminars given by Greenwich Education Group staff.

“Everyone at Sono Field House is excited about the possibilities these new services hold for our members — both young people and their parents,” said Scott Johnson, general manager of the South Norwalk facility. “In today’s world, our student athletes face a number of significant challenges when it comes to academics. Our goal, in making these services available on-site, is to provide them tools that will not only help them achieve their athletic aspirations, but their educational goals as well.”
