Amazing Kreskin’s legendary act comes to Greenwich

The Amazing Kreskin needs little introduction and no equipment.

“The only equipment I need are the thoughts of my audience members,” said The Amazing Kreskin himself in an interview with the Post ahead of his weekend appearance in Greenwich.

Kreskin is a well known mentalist and long time showman, having appeared on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, Late Show with David Letterman and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. He will be bringing his act live to the Arch Street Teen Center on Dec. 8.

His long spanning career and countless appearances on the late night talk show circuit suggest that Kreskin cracked the code of show business. He has a permanent place in popular culture and yet continues to tour 46 weeks out of the year.

So how is it that an act that gained popularity in the 1970s is still going strong today? Kreskin couldn’t have explained it better – “there is no boundary between me and my audience because my audience is an extension of what I do.”

As a mentalist, Kreskin says he connects with each audience uniquely, reading and translating the thoughts of its members, and though there is a road map for each performance the creativity of the audience and their thoughts is what makes for an ever-changing experience. His shows have the excitement of Mystery Theater, but the answer to “whodunit?” is different each time.

The Amazing Kreskin’s performance is part of a series at The Greenwich Teen Center called “Arts in Action” and is a family centered event meant to include all ages. This is a new endeavor for the Greenwich Teen Center and they are thrilled to have The Amazing Kreskin.

“People are mostly surprised that he’s coming here, the response so far has been great,” said Kyle Silver, executive director of the Teen Center.

Not long after scheduling the performance at the center, Kreskin says he picked up on a certain “ghostly vibration” in Greenwich. In response, he extended the show’s time by 30 minutes and he promises a “happening” or encounter with these spirits; making for a “very dramatic scenario”. Those good vibrations may be thanks to the building that houses the center, which was built in the late 19th century. It’s these special characteristics of the cities and towns that Kreskin visits that make every Amazing Kreskin performance one of a kind, enabling him to connect to generations of audience members.

Kreskin has also recently published his 19th book Conversations with Kreskin was published in August and is filled with stories about a career that Kreskin himself calls an “adventure”. If the nature of his work isn’t exciting enough, his insider show business stories and personal anecdotes on the life of a mentalist are sure to entertain.

The main event of this weekend’s performance will be a challenge that Kreskin poses to himself. He will select a group of audience members to hide his check for his payment for the evening’s show somewhere in the auditorium while he steps out of the room, afterwards returning to find it. And when it comes to Kreskin, things can turn up in unlikely places; he once found a hidden check on the inside of an audience member’s mouth.

Whether you are one of his longtime fans, or haven’t yet heard of The Amazing Kreskin this seasoned performer and gifted mentalist is never short of surprises.

The Amazing Kreskin will be performing live on Saturday from 7:30 to 10 p.m. at the Greenwich Teen Center at 100 Arch Street. Tickets are available online at Archstreet.org.
