Greenwich hockey tops Tigers, 5-4, in double OT

For the second time in eight days, the Greenwich Cardinals boys ice hockey team has knocked the Ridgefield Tigers out of a playoff tournament.

This time, however, it required some extra work.

Alex Mozian scored off a feed from defenseman Colin Kelley early in double overtime, giving the Cardinals a 5-4 victory in the CIAC Div. I tournament at Hamill Rink in Greenwich.

Fifth-seeded Greenwich will face No. 13 Hamden in the quarterfinals on Saturday at a time and site to be announced.

Greenwich, which won the FCIAC championship on Saturday, improved to 19-4 this season, while 12th-seeded Ridgefield fell to 11-10-2.

Brothers Alex and Mike Mozian each scored twice for the Cards, while Kelly had the other goal i addition to his helper on the game-winner.

K.C. Cunningham had two assists, and Akira Dunham and Ben Van Duyne had one assist apiece.

The game was a roller coaster ride throughout.

Greenwich scored the game’s first goal courtesy of Mike Mozian at 2:29 of the opening period, but Ridgefield answered with goals from Pete Sarath on a power play, and Matteo Van Wees to take a 2-1 lead.

In the second period, the Cardinals scored twice to retake the lead at 3-2. Mike Mozian tied the score at 1:01, and Kelly put Greenwich up during a 5-on-3 midway through the frame.

In the third period, Ridgefield’s Ben Welsh tied the score at 3-3, but Alex Mozian responded to make it 4-3 in favor of Greenwich.

Ridgefield’s Harrison Chuma found the net during a power play with 5:13 on the clock, tying the game at 4-4 and forcing overtime.

The Tigers had 1:47 remaining on a power play when the second overtime began, but Greenwich killed it and scored at the 3:10 mark. Kelly carried the puck into the zone, looped behind the net, and sent a pass to Alex Mozian, who hit the net for the victory.

The teams combined to commit 11 penalties — Greenwich had five and Ridgefield had six.

Cardinal goalie Nick Bozzuto, who shut out the Tigers during a 3-0 win in the FCIAC semifinals, collected 28 saves on Wednesday, with two of Ridgefield’s goals coming with a man advantage.
