Annual Toys for Tots event returns Saturday

It’s “the most wonderful time of the year,” but many less fortunate children in the Greenwich and Stamford area are in need of toy donations on Saturday to make the season bright this year.

That’s where Jack Kriskey comes in. The town resident has been conducting a local Toys for Tots donation event for the last 12 years in hopes of helping needy children in Stamford and Greenwich enjoy Christmas presents they might otherwise not receive.

Working with the U.S. Marine Corps for the eighth year, Mr. Kriskey will hold this year’s Toys for Tots event on Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Cos Cob firehouse from 10 to noon and at the Banksville Community House from 11 to 1. The event has become a popular one in the community as people turn out to donate and have some family fun.

The whole community, including children, is invited to join the Marines as they load up their seven-ton military vehicle with donated toys, which they later deliver and distribute in Stamford Center, Mr. Kriskey told the Post. Members of the Marine Corps will greet the children and even choose a lucky few to hop into their vehicle to help load the toys.

“The tires are bigger than the kids,” Mr. Kriskey said. “They love it.”

A total of 60 local organizations, such as the Greenwich Department of Social Services, have requested toys for the families they serve this year, which is an increase from last year.

“Demand keeps getting greater and greater,” he said. Nevertheless, Stamford and Greenwich are generous communities and always pull through with enough toys for everyone, he added.

To donate on Saturday, bring new, unwrapped toys for children ranging from infants to 12-year-olds. The older children, closer to 12 years old, are especially in need of age-appropriate gifts since many people tend to buy toys for younger kids, Mr. Kriskey said.

Alternately, checks made payable to Toys for Tots are gladly accepted, he said. And for late-comers who miss Saturday’s event but would still like to donate to the cause, Mr. Kriskey will be accepting Toys for Tots checks through Dec. 20.
