People who’ve made a significant contribution to African American culture and causes were recognized in Bridgeport on Feb. 28 in honor of Black History month.

Senator Richard Blumenthal, Mayor Joe Ganim, Needs Clearing House Founder and President Joe Kaliko along with News 12 Connecticut’s Frank Recchia were among the honorees at East End Baptist Tabernacle.

State Representative Charlie Stallworth, who is also the pastor at that church, said each recipient has worked hard to serve the African American community.

Senator Blumenthal said during the award presentation that “Public service is what makes America great. That’s what we celebrate today.”

Joe Kaliko, said “I am humbled by this honor.  I look forward to continue, via the Needs Clearing House, to help individuals, charities and communities throughout southwest Connecticut in the years to come.” Kaliko went on to thank Reverend Stallworth for the honor and the opportunity to serve the community.
