Top jazz artists unite for holiday show

BackCountry Jazz, the Greenwich organization putting on concerts throughout the community and sponsoring a burgeoning music camp for young musicians each summer in Bridgeport, will be putting on a “Havana Holidays” concert and hosting a champagne and Coturri wine reception Saturday, Dec. 1.

The evening, created by town resident Bennie Wallace, musical director of BackCountry Jazz and an acclaimed professional saxophonist, is reassembling some of the top professional musicians who recently played a standing-room-only Louis Armstrong concert at the Greenwich Library. Among those scheduled are Wendell Brunious on trumpet, Herlin Riley and Victor Lewis on drums, Donald Vega on piano and the great jazz bassist, Peter Washington.

In addition, the Greenwich High School Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of John Yoon, will perform. There is also a special guest vocalist whose name will be revealed at the concert.

The Havana Nights theme is inspired by the GHS Jazz Band’s upcoming trip to Cuba. The band members are working with Mr. Brunious and BackCountry Jazz artist Andy Schoenfeld in preparing this music. The program will include a wide variety of jazz with a focus on this historic cultural collaboration.

“We are thanking and serenading our generous sponsors and friends who make our music camp possible, and help us to keep the best traditions of jazz alive and well. Jazz is music of social, cultural and artistic integration and a powerful tool to enhance cognitive and educational development. It is also accessible music that can inspire greater cultural and musical literacy,” Mr. Wallace said.

The event takes place Dec. 1 at St. Bede’s Chapel. Tickets are $100 per person. Patron levels are $250, $500, $1,000, $5,000 and $10,000. Seating is limited. Information and tickets may be obtained by calling 203-869-9454 or e-mailing [email protected]
