NAMI program helps families understand mental illness

Family and friends of those with mental illness will have an opportunity to learn support and coping skills in a free 11-week course that meets Monday evenings, 6:30 to 9, beginning March 14, at Westport Day School in Wilton. Developed by the National Alliance on Mental Illness NAMI), the course will be taught by trained instructors who have first-hand experience in meeting the challenges faced by these families.

The course covers depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders. Participants learn how mental illness affects a person’s brain and behavior, the impact of medications, and how families can help. Workshops focus on empathy, communication and coping skills.
