Greenwich gymnasts soar to first state championship

The Greenwich Cardinals is a perfect 2-for-2 in gymnastics championships this season, as they captured their first state championship at the CIAC Class L meet Saturday at Pomperaug High School.

Led by Adnerys De Jesus and Kelsey Fedorko, the Cardinals were dominating, scoring 140.425 points to win by nearly six over runner-up Southington (134.45). Glastonbury (132.95) was third and fellow FCIAC team Trumbull (131.8) was fourth.

De Jesus, the FCIAC individual champion in the all-around, continued to shine during her sophomore campaign. She won the Class L all-around title with 38.575 points, and won event event, scoring 9.7 on the vault, 9.6 on the bars, 9.55 on the balance beam, and 9.725 on the floor.

Fedorko, a freshman, scored 36.025 to finish as the runner-up in the all-around. Shwe was also second in the floor exercises (9.3), and on the balance beam (9.25), tied for second on the vault (9.075), and tied for third on the bars (8.4).

“I am very proud of these girls because they’ve been consistent from day one,” head coach Sue Knight told Paul Silverfarb of the Greewich Sentinel. “Sometimes in big championship meets like this, the girls could get a little nervous. But these girls rocked it today. They were solid and nothing bothered them.”

Greenwich also had a great day from freshman Gianna Cardini, who scored 8.45 on the vault, 8.175 on the floor, and 8.0 on the bars.

Senior Fiona Brock scored 8.6 on the beam, 8.1 on the vault, and 7.9 on the bars, while senior Aisling Brock scored 8.525 on the floor and 8.075 on the beam.

The Cardinals will battle for the State Open championship next Saturday at New Milford High School.
