New Haven man reportedly commits armed robbery, flees on bicycle

Lamar Lawrence, a 19-year-old New Haven man, who had allegedly been hiding in Greenwich to elude his parole officer was arrested in town and charged with several offenses including armed robbery.

According to police, Mr. Lawrence stole a red bicycle with “mag lights” on the handle bars and a blue bandana tied to the frame from the rear of the CVS Pharmacy located at 120 Post Road around 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 19. At approximately 8 p.m. later that night, Greenwich officers were detailed to the area of Fairfield Road and Brookridge Drive on the report of an armed robbery in which the male suspect displayed a silver handgun and fled on a bicycle.

The victim told police that while walking west on Fairfield Road he was approached from behind by a man on a bicycle, who police believe to be Mr. Lawrence, who displayed a silver handgun and told him to lay down on the sidewalk. The suspect then allegedly dismounted the bike and proceeded to pat the victim down, ordering him to hand over his money and cell phone. Mr. Lawrence then allegedly removed the only property on the victim’s person which consisted of an iPod nano and a drivers license.

While the victim was lying on the ground a witness reportedly observed the bicycle lying on the road and believed an accident had occurred, prompting him to stop his vehicle. According to the victim, the perpetrator told him to “act natural” and returned his license. When the witness exited his vehicle, the suspect fled the area on the bicycle.

Both the victim and the witness described the suspect as a male, approximately 5’8” tall and 170 pounds, wearing a light blue hooded sweatshirt and a dark bandana across his face. Using this description, detectives developed information about a possible suspect to the robbery who may have been staying about three quarters of a mile from the crime scene. Soon thereafter, investigators observed Mr. Lawrence, who fit the physical description of the suspect, dressed in a light blue hooded sweatshirt pedal a bicycle up the driveway of a house on Sinawoy Road.

Upon investigating the house, police located a loaded silver pistol, clothing matching those worn by the suspect and the stolen bicycle. While being detained, Mr. Lawrence allegedly lied to officers by providing them with a false name. He was later positively identified.

Police also discovered that Mr. Lawrence is currently on parole for robbery charges within Connecticut and contacted his parole officer.

Mr. Lawrence was charged with first degree robbery, criminal possession of a firearm, interfering with an officer, sixth degree larceny and risk of injury and was held at police headquarters. He is due in court Nov. 28.
