Late opening for Greenwich schools

TUESDAY, 10 A.M. — John Street has reopened, according to Greenwich Police

TUESDAY, 9 A.M. — John Street is closed between Riversville Road and Round Hill Road, where icing on the roadway has caused several minor crashes, according to Greenwich Police.

TUESDAY, 5 A.M. — Greenwich Public Schools are opening on a 2-hour delay amid messy morning commute Tuesday, Feb. 16, has affected some Greenwich schools.

Greenwich Academy is opening on a 2-hour delay

The National Weather Service has interior Fairfield and New Haven counties under a winter weather advisory until 7 a.m. Tuesday. Freezing rain is expected to turn into plain rain around daybreak, but after accumulations of up to one-10th of an inch of ice.

“A slow thaw of frozen ground is expected to result in icing of untreated road surfaces and walkways … into early Tuesday morning,” according to the National Weather service advisory, which warned conditions could make travel dangerous into the early Tuesday commute.

Rising temperatures will be accompanied by heavy rain, and minor coastal flooding is possible later on Tuesday.

Numerous accidents were reported on the Merritt and Wilbur Cross parkways, and I-95 North was closed in New Haven and Guilford before dawn Tuesday due to crashes involving tractor-trailers.

Temperatures are expected to reach the mid-50s with strong winds Tuesday, and highs are expected to exceed the freezing mark the rest of this week.
