Greenwich gymnasts rule FCIAC; De Jesus wins all-around

It’s been a long time since the Greenwich Cardinals finished a winter season as the top team in the FCIAC — 34 years to be exact.

When they conquered the league on Saturday, the Cardinals left no doubt.

Led by another amazing performance from sophomore Adnerys De Jesus, who won the all-around title. Greenwich put up a team score of 143 to win the FCIAC championship Saturday at Jonathan Law High School in Milford.

The Cardinals’ score was eight points better than runner-up Darien, which scored 135, as the second through fifth spots were all within four points of each other. After Darien, Wilton (133.6), Ludlowe (133.55), and Trumbull (130.95) rounded out the top five.

“This is just awesome,” Greenwich head coach Sue Knight told Paul Silverfarb of the Greenwich Sentinel. “I am so happy for the girls because they worked so hard and were so dedicated. I am just super happy for them. We have been consistent throughout the whole season and to do that again at FCIACs, where the girls have a little nerves going, is just amazing. It’s a great day for us.”

DeJesus won the all-around title with a score of 38.5, topping last year’s champion, Darien’s Samantha Aparicio, who was second with a score of 37.1.

DeJesus finished first in every event, winning the vault (9.7), bars (9.6), beam (9.55), and floor (9.65) by decent margins.

She wasn’t the only Cardinal to have a great day, as freshman Kelsey Fedorko was third in the all-around with a 36.5 score. She was second on the beam (9.3) and third on the vault (9.15), bars (8.7) and floor (9.4).

Aparicio had a great day for Darien, finishing second on the vault (9.3), bars (9.05) and floor (9.5), and third on the beam (9.25).
