Greenwich athletes compete for GFA

Girls varsity basketball

The GFA girls varsity basketball team went 1-1 on the week, beating NEPSAC opponent Christian Heritage, 57-20 and then losing to FAA rival, School of the Holy Child, 53-58.

Against Christian Heritage, the Dragons came out aggressive in their defense, notching 17 first half steals with many of those coming off the press. Junior captain Lexi Kimball (Easton) finished with the game high 19 points, 12 steals, 4 rebounds and 3 blocks. Eighth grader Ashley Humphrey (Darien) had 13 points, 4 steals, 2 assists and 1 block. Freshman Katherine Marcus (New Canaan) finished with 9 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals, while freshmen Kelly Van Hoesen (Greenwich) had 7 points and 7 rebounds and sophomore Hannah Kozdeba (Shelton) added 6 points and 8 rebounds.

In the second game on the week, there were 46 foul calls between both teams and 28 free throws shot by the opponent. Kimball finished with a game-high of 36 points, 6 steals, 4 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 assists. Marcus had 9 points, 5 rebounds, 6 steals and 4 assists.

Varsity squash

Boys

Monday, Feb. 1, the boys took on Brunswick, and pulled out a 4-3 victory. No. 1 player, senior captain Jack Mackle (New Canaan), won in five: 5-11, 11-4, 11-8, 6-11, 12-10. Sophomores John Selkowitz (Norwalk) and Duda Voldman (Stamford) won their matches in three sets. Freshman Andy McIlvaine (Darien) broke the tie to secure the win for the Dragons (6-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-9).

Thursday, Feb. 4, the boys took on Rye High School, losing 2-5. Voldman earned a win, 11-5, 11-3, and 11-8. Playing in the three spot, Selkowitz also won his match (11-9, 7-11, 11-8, and 11-7). Sophomore Jack Soper (Southport) lost a close match that went to five games (8-11, 11-6, 11-9, 9-11, 5-11).

Girls

On Monday, Feb. 1, the girls took on Convent of the Sacred Heart in Greenwich, losing 0-7. Playing for GFA were sophomore No. 1 Katie Mackle (New Canaan), senior Georgia Bakes (Rowayton) in the No. 4 spot, and senior Bella Kallassy.

Then on Wednesday, Feb. 3, the Dragons challenged Rye Country Day School, losing 0-7. Mackle played a competitive match as the one seed but lost in three games (11-13, 4-11, and 4-11). Playing at No. 2, senior Ingrid Backe (Fairfield) earned the second most points but also lost in three (5-11, 0-11, 2-11). Freshman Kyra Lerner (Westport) lost in three (0-11, 3-11, 3-11).

Varsity wrestling 

On. Feb. 3, the Dragon wrestling team wrestled its final dual meet of the season against the Canterbury School of New Milford. Wrestling at 113 pounds, Sam Stuart (Fairfield) earned a major decision, and at 182 pounds, senior Simon Stone (Wilton) won by pin, as did junior Hans Forland (Wilton) at 120 pounds.

Boys varsity basketball

The boys varsity basketball team went 2-1 last week.

On Monday, Feb. 1, the Dragons fell short against Brunswick 68-71. Senior Dom Cristiano (Valhalla, N.Y.) had a massive 25 point and 17 rebound game. Junior Sunday Okeke (Darien) had 19 points, 17 rebounds, 3 assists and 5 blocks. Senior Isaac Manton (Greenwich) had 11 assists; junior Evan Roteman (Westport) had 4 assists and 7 points; sophomore Henry Holzinger (Norwalk) scored 6, rebounded 6 and had 3 assists. Junior Elvin Rodriguez (Harlem) scored 7, rebounded 4 and assisted on 3. Junior Mack Muller (Westport), senior Pat Seegers (Stamford), and sophomore Bennett Close (Norwalk) also got themselves onto the stat sheet.

Thursday, Feb. 4, the Dragons faced Spire Institute (Cleveland, Ohio), winning 88-55. Cristiano had 25 points; Okeke had 15 points, 15 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 blocks. Manton scored 16, rebounded 8 and assisted on 7; Roteman had 8 assists; Rodriguez scored 12; and Holzinger scored 8, rebounded 7 and assisted on 4.

Saturday, Feb. 6, GFA traveled to the Hyde School, winning 67-63. Seegers came in off the bench to contribute 10 points and 11 rebounds. Guards Manton, Holzinger, Roteman and Rodriguez combined for 24 assists, mostly feeding Cristiano (24 points) and Okeke (15 points). GFA finally took the lead at the two minutes remaining mark, and made their late free throws as needed to secure the win. Manton put up his second triple-double in the past two weeks with 13 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. Okeke (12 rebounds) and Cristiano (13 rebounds) joined Seegers in the double-double count.

Varsity fencing

GFA boys fencing competed against Brunswick on Tuesday, Feb. 2, and won 15-12

GFA men’s epee won 7-2 against the Brunswick epee squad. Senior and team captain Ryan Petschek (Norwalk) went 2-1, senior Alex McKenna (Stamford) went 2-1, and junior Phil Nicopoulos (Wilton) finished undefeated with a 3-0 score.

GFA men’s foil lost 3-6 against the Brunswick foil squad. Sophomore Teddy Gartland (Darien) went 2-1, while sophomore Chili Hopkins (Old Greenwich) went 1-2. Sophomore Matt Jackmauh (Old Greenwich) went 0-2, and freshman Willem Schuddeboom (Darien) went 0-1.

GFA men’s saber won 5-4 against the Brunswick saber squad. Senior and team armorer Matthew Lichtenberg (Stamford) went 2-1, while junior Will Whitman (Stamford) finished 2-1, and freshman Alex Galik (Darien) went 1-2.

GFA girls fencing competed against Greenwich Academy on Tuesday, Feb. 2, and lost 17-10.

GFA women’s foil lost against Greenwich with a final score of 4-5. Senior, Kate Koster (Westport) lost 0-2, but won one bout be default. Senior Kate Allan (Fairfield) tied her bouts 1-1 and won one match by default. Freshman Alida Deutsch (Westport) lost 0-3.

GFA women’s epee lost 3-6 against Greenwich’s team. Freshman Amy Petschek (Norwalk) lost 1-2. Senior Caroline Booth (Westport) won her matches 2-1. Junior Shira Friedson (Trumbull) lost her matches 0-3.

GFA women’s saber lost 3-6 against a challenging Greenwich Academy team. Friedson lost 1-2. Senior Daria Locher (Darien) won 2-1 and sophomore Caroline Telesz (Fairfield) lost 0-3.
