Greenwich Farms Academy Round-Up

Boys varsity basketball

On Friday, Jan. 22, GFA beat Rye Country Day School 65-28. Defensively, the Dragons allowed only 18 points in the first half, and 10 in the second half. Senior Isaac Manton (Greenwich) had a career high of eight assists. Juniors Evan Roteman (Westport), Elvin Rodriguez (Darien), Matt Smith (Purchase, N.Y.) and sophomore Bennett Close (Norwalk) also sliced up the Wildcats’ zone with terrific ball movement to the open man. Manton, Roteman, junior Mack Muller (Westport) and sophomore Henry Holzinger (Norwalk) all hit three point shots. Junior Sunday Okeke (Darien) had 18 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 blocks; senior Dom Cristiano (Valhalla, N.Y.) had 10 points, 10 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 steals; and seniors Chile Larraguibel (Greenwich) and Pat Seegers (Stamford) each had 6 points, going three-for-three.

Varsity wrestling

The GFA Wrestling team began the week at The Marvelwood School in Kent against Marvelwood and The Woodhall School. Senior Simon Stone (Wilton) and sophomore Sam Stuart (Fairfield) were both undefeated on the day winning each of their matches by pin.

Girls varsity basketball

The Greens Farms Academy went (2-0) last week, defeating Millbrook School, 44-28, and The Westover School, 71-49, bringing their overall record to 7-4 overall. Against Millbrook, GFA found much of their early offense come from their defense: 16 first half steals and numerous fast break opportunities. Junior captain Lexi Kimball (Easton) led the Dragons with 27 points, 5 steals and 6 rebounds. Eighth grader Ashley Humphrey (Darien) had 6 points, 4 assists and 1 steal, while freshman Katherine Marcus (New Canaan) added 5 points, 6 rebounds, 5 steals and 1 assist.

In the team’s second game of the week, GFA again traveled to The Westover School, winning over a NEPSAC rival. GFA combined for 22 steals, 39 rebounds, 16 assists and 7 blocks. Kimball tied her career-high of 37 points, and finished with 10 steals, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 blocks. Freshman Kelly Van Hoesen (Greenwich) also had a career night notching her first double-double of 10 points, 10 rebounds and 3 steals. Fellow freshman Nicole Humphrey (Darien) and sister Ashley Humphrey scored 8 points apiece. Marcus chipped in 6 points, as well as 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Senior captain Caroline Lewis (Fairfield) completed the scoring with 2 points, 5 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 assists.

Girls’ squash

On Wednesday, Jan. 20, the Dragons traveled to Canterbury losing 2-5. Playing No. 1 for the team, sophomore Katie Mackle (New Canaan) defeated her opponent in three games (11-6, 11-2, 11-6). Senior Ingrid Backe (Fairfield) lost her first game but went on to defeat her opponent (8-11, 11-8, 11-5, and 11-7). Senior Georgia Bakes (New Canaan) played in the No. 3 spot, finishing 3-11, 6-11, 1-11.

Boys’ squash

On Wednesday, Jan. 20, the Dragons beat Masters School 5-2. Sophomores Jack Soper (Southport), John Selkowitz (Darien) and Alex Necakov (Darien) won in 3 sets, as did senior Anders Bottger (Redding) and junior Robert Marcus (New Canaan). Senior Jack Mackle (New Canaan) and sophomore Duda Voldman had tough matches, but played well.

Then on Thursday, Jan. 21, the Dragons faced New Canaan High School, losing 1-6. Mackle played at the No. 1 spot but lost in five games (12-10, 11-9, 6-11, 4-11, 8-11). Voldman defeated his opponent in three games (11-4, 13-11, 3-11). Bottger lost in four (4-11, 11-3, 5-11, 8-11). Freshman Andy McIlvaine (Darien) beat a tough opponent in four games (11-7, 9-11, 12-14, 12-10).
