Sacred Heart recognizes National Merit students

The Convent of the Sacred Heart announced that 17 students have been named Commended Students in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program.

A Letter of Commendation from Sacred Heart and the National Merit Scholarship Corp., which conducts the program, was presented by Head of School Pamela Juan Hayes to these scholastically talented seniors.

The students who were named National Merit Commended Students were Taylor Blevin of Greenwich, Alison Brett of Rye, N.Y., Polly Bruce of Old Greenwich; Emma Burke of Greenwich, Katie Ellison of Riverside, Bridgette Fucigna of Stamford, Madeleine Hay of Port Chester, N.Y., Nora Henrie of Stamford, Sarah Hirshorn of West Harrison, N.Y., Alexandra Jordan of Stamford, Allison Kenny of Rye, N.Y., Nicole Polemeni-Hegarty of Goldens Bridge, N.Y., Margaret Purcell of Rye, N.Y., Kelsey Roche of Darien, Christa Ruggiero of Greenwich, Carolyn Schnackenberg of Greenwich and Nicole Zoulis of Yonkers, N.Y.


Close to 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise.

Although they will not continue in the 2013 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2013 competition by taking the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

“Recognizing academically talented students plays a fundamental role in the advancement of educational excellence within our nation,” said a National Merit spokesperson.

“The young people recognized as Commended Students represent some of the best and the brightest minds in the country.”
