Greenwich Farms Academy Sports Round-Up

Varsity wrestling

The GFA Dragon wrestling team competed in four dual meets this week including matches against The Salisbury School, Pomfret School, Choate Rosemary Hall and Marianapolis Prep. The Dragons were 1-3 on the week losing to Pomfret, Choate and Marianapolis while defeating Salisbury.

On Wednesday, Jan 13, the Dragons defeated Salisbury 42-24 with key wins coming from sophomore Nick Attai (Bridgeport) at 132 and senior Simon Stone (Wilton) at 182.

Facing the Pomfret School on Saturday, Jan. 16, junior Hans Forland (Wilton) went undefeated. Sophomores Sam Stuart (Fairfield), Nick Attai and Junior Simon Stone went 2-1 on the day.

Girls varsity basketball

The Lady Dragons went 1-1 on the week with a loss to Rye Country Day School, 40-54, but bounced back with a 57-38 win over The Masters School from Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.

In the first match-up of the week, GFA was led offensively by junior Lexi Kimball (Easton) with 20 points, 10 steals and 6 rebounds. Freshman Katherine Marcus (New Canaan) put in 8 points and had 4 rebounds and junior Olivia Sullivan (Norwalk) pulled down 11 rebounds.

In the second game with Masters, GFA improved to 5-4 on the season, led by Kimball who finished the game with 31 points, 9 steals, 6 rebounds and 3 blocks. Sullivan had 10 points and 4 rebounds and sophomore Hannah Kozdeba (Shelton) and eighth grader Ashley Humphrey (Darien) put in 7 points apiece, as well as a combined 10 rebounds and 6 steals. Senior captain Caroline Lewis (Fairfield) completed the scoring off with 2 points, 5 steals and 5 rebounds and freshman Kelly Van Hoesen (Greenwich) had 7 rebounds.

Varsity squash

The boys squash teams went 1-1 this week. Wednesday, Jan. 13, the Dragons lost 7-0 to Rye Country Day School. Sophomore Duda Voldman (Stamford) played a competitive match at the two spot, 10-12, 11-9, 10-12, 6-11. Sophomore Alex Necakov (Darien) fought a five-game match as the fifth seed but lost 13-11, 11-8, 4-11, 3-11, 2-11. Freshman Andy McIlvaine (Darien) got into his first match, playing a competitive exhibition match as the team’s No. 8.

The next day the boys bounced back and beat King 6-1. Senior captain Jack Mackle (New Canaan) took control of his game and, he dominated all the way through the match. Sophomores John Selkowitz (Norwalk)and Jack Soper (Southport) won their matches in three games, while junior Robert Marcus (New Canaan) beat his opponent 11-3, 11-4 and 11-5, and seniors Anders Bottger (Redding) and Patrick Friend (Darien) only allowed their opponent a few points each game.

The girls squash teams went 0-2 last week against Holy Child (5-2) and Greenwich Academy (0-7). Against Holy Child, senior Ingrid Back (Fairfield) continued her personal winning streak by taking her opponent in three games, 11-5, 11-9, and 11-6. Senior Avery Vanacore (Darien) played another competitive five game match and came out on top, 9-11, 11-4, 8-11, 12-10, 11-3. Sophomore Katie Mackle (New Canaan) played at the No. 1 spot, finishing 7-11, 9-11, and 6-11.

Thursday the Dragons took on a squash powerhouse, Greenwich Academy. Mackle battled in a tough match at the No. 1 spot but lost in the fifth game 10-12, 11-8, 11-6, 7-11, 8-11. Vanacore also played a close match, taking the third game to 12 points 4-11, 6-11, 10-12. Freshman Christina Brittis (Southport) played in the seven spot, going 7-11, 4-11 and 7-11.

Boys varsity basketball

This week they defeated two FAA rivals, the Masters School (58-42) and the King School (66-33).

Against the Masters School on Tuesday, Jan. 12, juniors Evan Roteman (Westport), Mack Muller (Westport), Jacob Manton (Greenwich), and Elvin Rodriguez (Darien), senior Matt Smith (Purchase), freshman Brady Reynolds (Wilton) and senior Isaac Manton (Greenwich) all contributed to the win. Junior Sunday Okeke (Darien) had 14 points and four assists. Roteman was 4-4 from beyond the arc. Freshman Henry Holzinger (Norwalk) hit three 3s, scoring 13 total and snatching 6 rebounds. On defense, Okeke had 14 rebounds and Cristiano had 10.

GFA faced King on Thursday, Jan. 14. Cristiano had 17 points and 7 rebounds; Okeke had 17 rebounds. Seniors Chile Larraguibel (Greenwich) scored 8 points and had 7 rebounds. Rodriguez had 10 points, 2 breakaway dunks, 4 rebounds and 6 assists; Holzinger had 9 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists; senior Isaac Manton had 8 points, one break-away dunk. The team held King to just 10 second half points.
