Sacred Heart Greenwich holds prayer service celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.

Sacred Heart Greenwich, an independent day school, will welcome Barbara Dawson, the Society of the Sacred Heart’s Provincial of the United States and Canada, on Friday, Jan. 15 to its annual prayer service celebrating the legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The prayer service will begin at 9:20 a.m. in the DuBois Gymnasium of the school’s athletic center at 1177 King Street in Greenwich. The ever-popular Gospel Knights singers and the Vision Steppers dance troupe will perform.

Sr. Dawson will be the guest speaker and her talk will focus on the similarities between Dr. King’s message and the school’s mission in striving for peace, non-violence and social justice.

Sr. Dawson is both a lawyer and an educator. She has already served two terms as head of the U.S. Province, from 1993 to 1999. A native of San Francisco, her most recent ministry was in Jakarta, Indonesia, where she consulted with the Society of the Sacred Heart. Prior to Indonesia, she was head of school at St. Martin de Porres School in West Oakland, California and a consultant to the Urban Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Oakland.

Sr. Dawson earned her bachelor of arts from Lone Mountain College (now the University of San Francisco), and a law degree from the University of San Francisco. She received a master of arts in international comparative education from Stanford University. She is a member of the bar in both California and Missouri and serves on the board of trustees for Sacred Heart Schools, in Atherton, California, the Network of Sacred Heart Schools, and the School of Applied Theology in Berkeley, California.

Sacred Heart Greenwich has an enrollment of 740 girls from kindergarten through twelfth grade. In addition, the school’s Barat Center for Early Childhood Education enrolls boys and girls, ages 3-5.  The school is one of 22 in the Network of Sacred Heart Schools in the U.S. and Canada.
