Royce’s gift helps Historical Society

A long-awaited restoration and improvement project at the Bush-Holley House is done and the Greenwich Historical Society says town residents Deborah and Chuck Royce must be thanked for it.

According to the historical society, the couple’s $300,000 gift over two years capped off a campaign to replace the roof on Bush-Holley House, which is Greenwich’s only National Historic Landmark, and also provide funds to replace a previously removed dormer in a room that served as a studio for art colony members Childe Hassam, John Twachtman and Elmer MacRae

In addition to the Bush-Holley House construction project, the Royces’ gift provides leadership funding for two upcoming art exhibitions. The first, A Good Light: The Artist’s Studio in Cos Cob and Beyond, is scheduled to open Oct. 3 and chronicles the changing concept of the artist’s studio at the turn of the 20th century through paintings and photographs. The second exhibition, planned for 2013, will mark the 100th anniversary of the 1913 New York International Exhibition of Modern Art, known as “The Armory Show,” where 300 artists of the day converged to display works that sowed the seeds of art movements for generations to come.

“We are deeply grateful for this support,” outgoing board chairman Susan Larkin said. “Serious collectors in their own right, the Royces clearly recognize the cultural and educational value of Bush-Holley Historic Site, which was the inspiration for so many iconic works by members of the Cos Cob art colony. I encourage the whole community to visit or revisit the house to experience this new interpretation of the studio and to learn more about the American Impressionist art movement which plays such an important part in the story of our community.”

Bush-Holley Historic Site is located at 39 Strickland Road, Cos Cob and is open Wednesday through Sunday from 12 to 4 p.m. Docent-led tours of the house take place at 1, 2 and 3 p.m.
