Work of famed Beatles photographer exhibited

In honor of the 50th Anniversary of the formation of the Beatles, Cavalier Gallery in Greenwich will present a special exhibition of photographs by Harry Benson, including his iconic images of “the fab four.”

Mr. Benson has spent the last five decades photographing world leaders, presidents, celebrities, artists, and crucial historical moments. But his successful career as a photograher was truly set in motion in 1964 while traveling on assignment with The Beatles to cover “Beatlemania” in Paris and then their legendary first tour in America.

The Beatles quickly became comfortable with Mr. Benson, allowing him to capture them not only performing and meeting their fans, but also in more intimate settings while they were composing, travelling, and interacting with each other.

The Scottish born photographer began his career at the Hamilton Advertiser before moving to Fleet Street where he worked for London’s Daily Sketch and the Daily Express. Upon his arrival with The Beatles in 1964, Mr. Benson decided to stay in America where he would go on to work for publishing giants such as Life Magazine, People Magazine, Vanity Fair, and Architectural Digest.

Throughout his career, Mr. Benson built a collection of images featuring American presidents from Eisenhower to Obama, Martin Luther King, Jr., Queen Elizabeth, Winston Churchill, The Beatles, Mohammad Ali, Elizabeth Taylor, Michael Jackson, and Andy Warhol, to name a few. This award winning photographer has had forty one-man exhibitions of his photographs in the US and Europe and his work remains in the permanent collection of several museums.

The exhibition is available Nov. 9 to Dec. 3 with a special reception for the photographer on Nov. 17 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Cavalier Galleries, Inc. is located at 405 Greenwich Avenue and is open Monday through Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday from noon to 5, and by appointment.
