Local architect, inductee into New England Design Hall of Fame

Douglas VanderHorn, principal of Douglas VanderHorn Architects in Greenwich, has been announced as a 2015 inductee into the New England Design Hall of Fame. This prestigious honor, sponsored by New England Home Magazine, recognizes the region’s finest architects, interior designers, landscape designers, and other design professionals whose work is of the highest caliber and who have made a significant contribution to the distinction and prominence of New England’s design field. The inductees will be formally honored at the 9th annual New England Design Hall of Fame gala on Nov. 12, 2015 at the State Room in downtown Boston.

Vetted out of a record number of nominations, judges felt VanderHorn’s profile represented an exceptional level of talent among the competition. Judges remark, “Douglas VanderHorn’s work doesn’t have a signature ‘look’. His clients may appreciate the traditional aesthetic, but VanderHorn knows they also need a home that functions for modern-day life. Behind his classic facades, he incorporates the latest in home technology and green design.” It is perhaps his trade background that informs VanderHorn’s holistic approach to design and construction: as a young man, he worked various construction jobs. This, coupled with a love for creating art and sculpture, led him to his chosen field. His work today sits at this intersection of art and craft, and has been recognized by a long list of awards and publications dating back more than a decade.

Serving as a means of bringing together the design community to recognize the depth of excellence and accomplishment shown by the inductees, New England Home’s Editor-in-Chief Kyle Hoepner believes the New England Design Hall of Fame assures the future of great design in New England by keeping the very best work in the public eye. Details of the event will be published in the November/December issue of New England Home magazine.

With over twenty-eight years of experience in a range of historic styles including Federal Style, Shingle Style, Tudor and French Normandy, Douglas VanderHorn Architects strives to create homes that are architecturally appropriate for the building site and surrounding neighborhood. Projects generally have a similar intent: to build a historically inspired home that looks as if it’s been on the site for decades, while creating a series of interior spaces designed for contemporary living.
