Pulitzer Prize-winning author visits Greenwich Library

Join [email protected] on Monday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m. for an evening with the provocative Adam Johnson, 2013 Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Orphan Master’s Son.

Fortune_Smiles_jacketIn his latest work, Fortune Smiles, Johnson continues to give voice to characters rarely heard from—among them, a North Korean defector, a Stasi prison warden, citizens in hurricane-stricken Louisiana, a cancer patient raging against her family living on without her—and in doing so, gives us a new way of looking at our world.

Subtly surreal and darkly comic, Fortune Smiles delves deep into love and loss, natural disasters, the influence of technology, and how the political shapes the personal. The new collection of short stories is called “masterful” (Washington Post) and “gleefully bleak” (New York Times Book Review) and is on the fiction shortlist for a National Book Award.

Adam Johnson is the author of The Orphan Master’s Son, winner of the Pulitzer Prize in fiction, the Dayton Literary Peace Prize, and the California Book Award, and finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. It was named one of the best books of the year by more than a dozen publications, including The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal. Johnson’s innumerable other awards include a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and a Stegner Fellowship. His previous books are Emporium, a short story collection, and the novel Parasites Like Us. Johnson teaches creative writing at Stanford University and lives in San Francisco with his wife and children.
