HealthyCT and CCAP team up for Health & Wellness Ride Saturday

If your Saturday, Oct. 17 plans involve leaf-peeping along our state’s scenic back roads between Hartford and Stamford, don’t be surprised to see a team of cyclists wearing orange shoes as bright as the fall foliage. A Pro-am team from the Connecticut Cycling Advancement Program (CCAP) will be participating in HealthyCT’s annual Health and Wellness Ride from the capital city to the fourth annual Stamford Hospital Health & Wellness Expo at Chelsea Piers Connecticut.

The cyclists will be riding to bring attention to the benefits of biking as great outdoor exercise that anyone can enjoy as recreation or competition. The team, which is sponsored by HealthyCT, also hopes to raise awareness about the importance of having health insurance – not just when you’re sick, but for all the non-cost benefits you get to help you stay healthy. The topic is very timely given that the annual sign-up period for health insurance begins in just two weeks. Like the non-profit health insurance company’s CEO, who often wears orange high-tops, the cycling team wears orange shoes and HCT-branded cycling socks.

“Our goal at HealthyCT is to help our members stay well, and our partnership with CCAP goes hand-in-glove with that mission, supporting an organization that is bringing hundreds of kids into the sport of cycling,” said HealthyCT CEO Ken Lalime. “We use this ride each year as a way to highlight a terrific form of physical activity and the upcoming open enrollment period that starts November 1.”

The riders will start their 88-mile journey at Hartford’s XL Center and continue through Farmington, Cheshire, Beacon Falls, Monroe, Redding, Wilton and New Canaan before ending at Stamford’s Chelsea Piers Connecticut, 1 Blachley Road, around 1 p.m. The team will then ride for the rest of the day on their bikes on stationary rollers in the HealthyCT booth, where they will be available to talk to guests about CCAP, cycling and their ride across the state. Visitors can also learn more about Connecticut’s non-profit health insurance CO-OP and its health plans for families and businesses from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

On Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the CCAP team again will join HealthyCT and will race attendees on electronic race simulator bikes. HealthyCT also is sponsoring the event’s Passport for Life booklets that attendees will get to record information from the many free health and wellness screenings available that day, and to be eligible to win some great prizes.
