The Greenwich Public Schools Office of the Superintendent, 290 Greenwich Avenue, release the following Asbestos Abatement Notification Letter.

To: GHS parents / guardians / staff members

From: William McKersie, Ph.D., Superintendent

Date: October 7, 2015

Re: Parents/Guardian/Staff Notification Asbestos Abatement

As you may be aware, the Greenwich High School has been authorized to begin work on renovation of the band, orchestra, and chorus rooms. Due to the age of the building, some residual asbestos containing material is present.

The intent of this memo is to inform you that asbestos abatement is being planned for the school building while portions of the school are occupied. The abatement will involve the removal of residual spray-on asbestos fireproofing. The asbestos abatement project has been authorized by the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health (CTDPH) following an inspection of the site and thorough review of the abatement plans. To ensure that the work will present no risk to staff or students occupying other areas, the construction area will be isolated from the rest of the building by air-tight physical barriers to prevent accidental entry and air exchange. Engineering controls will be employed to prevent any risk of exposure.

Asbestos removal will be performed on four consecutive weekends, starting on Friday, October 9, 2015, with scheduled completion by Sunday, November 1, 2015. All work will be conducted on weekends between Friday at 2:30 p.m. and Monday at 6 a.m.

The asbestos abatement work will be performed by Standard Abatement Services Inc./Standard Demolitions Services Inc., a State licensed asbestos abatement contractor. The project shall be monitored continuously by Hygenix Inc., an independent environmental consultant. The monitoring includes, but is not limited to, pre-abatement inspection, air sampling during the abatement process, final visual inspection and re-occupancy air clearance testing.

As required by the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health, this notification is being sent to all parents and guardians of the students, faculty and staff of Greenwich High School. Following are the details:

Project Start Date: October 9, 2015 (weekends only)
