‘Sound Sculptures’ on exhibit at the Flinn Gallery

The season’s kickoff exhibit has created quite a stir since opening on Thursday Sept. 17. Breaking recent attendance record history, Akinori Matsumoto ‘Sound Sculptures’ is a mesmerizing, site-specific installation that engages visitors in unexpected ways. The artist also entertained the gallery crowds with two interactive sound performances in collaboration with sound artist Michael Pestel, of Middletown, on opening night and on Saturday, Sept. 19.

Having created more than 300 different ‘sound objects’ over the past 30 years, with an extensive resume of exhibits and collections in his native Japan and throughout Asia, the Flinn Gallery event marks Akinori Matsumoto’s U.S. solo debut.

Constructed primarily of bamboo and a variety of handmade papers, with accents of metal and wood, the delicate, intricately constructed pieces move in a randomly orchestrated manner, some driven by concealed miniature motors and timers, others by the natural elements of body heat, air and motion. Surrounded by dancing shadows cast by the works, the installation transforms the gallery into an other-worldly sanctuary, inviting visitors in, captivating them to linger and luring them to return again and again.

Visitor comments:

— “ Very soothing”, “ Astonishing!” “Enchanting”

— Parents returning with their small children: ‘it is so calming’

— A vision-impaired visitor was ‘delighted by the rich sensory experience’

— Library patrons and staff enter the space for ‘a moment of solitude’.

Matsumoto has also created outdoor commissioned sculptures that are driven by the natural energy of wind, solar and water.

This exhibit was curated by Ann Finaly and Dianne Niklaus. All pieces featured are for sale; prices range from $150-$9,000. The show runs through Wednesday, Oct. 21. The Flinn Gallery is located on the 2nd floor of the Greenwich Library, 101 West Putnam Avenue, Greenwich. Open daily from 10-5, Thursday 10-8, Sun 1-5.
