Greenwich Education Group and Arch Street Greenwich Teen Center will offer a free college essay seminar for high school students and their parents on Wednesday, Oct. 7, from 6:30-8 p.m., at the Arch Street Greenwich Teen Center, 100 Arch Street, Greenwich.

The college essay — a stressful requirement for students and parents alike. But, it doesn’t have to be that way. With college applications due dates beginning November 1, there is still time to craft an essay in a more organized and less stressful manner.

The essay offers students a chance to grab the attention of college admissions officers and explain what makes them unique and why they would be a great addition to the college’s student body. But rather than becoming overwhelmed by this part of the application process, students can utilize a well-structured approach to effectively show themselves in the best light possible.

To help both students and parents with this college admissions rite of passage, Greenwich Education Group, in partnership with Arch Street Teen Center of Greenwich, will hold a free seminar entitled “Taking the Stress Out of the College Essay.” Arch Street is a drug and alcohol free center offering programs for 6th through 12th graders, as well as special speaker events for the parent community of Greenwich.

“The essay need not be viewed as a daunting task,” states Hilary Stark, Associate Director of College Consulting for Greenwich Education Group. “In reality, it gives students a chance to express themselves and provide insight into who they are. It can be the most personal and powerful part of the entire application.”

Stark has over 15 years of experience helping students choose the right schools for themselves and then navigating the entire college application process.

The seminar will cover a range of topics including choosing the most appropriate prompt questions on the Common Application as well as supplemental essay, selecting the right topics, using the right tone, style and approach, organizing the drafts and final versions and avoiding common mistakes.

Kyle Silver, Executive Director of Arch Street Greenwich Teen Center, explained the synergy in working with GEG given the important nature of the seminar. “The college application process can feel fairly intimidating for the entire family. We are pleased to be working with GEG to give students and parents an opportunity to lower the anxiety level in dealing with the challenges ahead.”
