Free pregnancy lecture at Greenwich YMCA

The nation’s Cesarean-section rate has increased dramatically over the last few decades, and many doctors discourage or do not perform VBACs (vaginal birth after Cesarean). More than one in three babies is delivered via C-section in Connecticut, which has one of the highest C-section rates in the country.

pregnant-womanFULLAt the same time there is a growing demand among pregnant women for a more natural pregnancy and childbirth experience, and there seems to be a backlash against excessive interventions, said Dr. Russell Turk, a board certified OB/GYN who has been practicing medicine for 25 years. “We are seeing more and more patients who are educated about the fact that many Cesareans are not necessary, and who realize that many OB/GYNs pay lip service to the notion of doing VBACS,” he said. “Unfortunately some of these patients are choosing home births, and that is not necessarily the safest route, especially if you’ve had a C-section.”

Dr. Russell Turk and Dr. Brian Yomtov will present a free lecture titled “Planning Your Pregnancy and Childbirth: Strategies for a Healthy Vaginal Delivery” on Tuesday, June 16, at 7 p.m., at the Greenwich YWCA. Dr. Turk, a board certified OB/GYN and Dr. Yomtov, a licensed chiropractor and acupuncturist, will address what patients and their doctors can do to acheive a low-intervention birth, avoid a C-section and/or undergo VBAC (vaginal birth after Cesarean) safely.

The goal of the lecture is to educate pregnant women about:

• How to prepare your body and mind during the crucial preconceptional period;

• How to achieve a low intervention or natural childbirth;

• The pitfalls of labor induction, scheduled C-sections and the risks and benefits of natural childbirth;

• How to prevent or limit the amount of discomfort such as low back pain experienced in pregnancy due to the added stresses on the body;

• How to incorporate optimal nutrition, supplementation and exercise into your pregnancy;

• How to alleviate pregnancy ailments naturally using chiropractic techniques, acupuncture and acupressure.
